Pinterest <b><i>IS <\/i><\/b>technically a social media platform. However, it\u2019s a platform that\u2019s unlike any of the other major networks. Pinterest is one part social, one part search, and two parts inspiration, making it a completely unique platform. If you continue to treat Pinterest like Facebook and Twitter, you&#8217;re making a huge mistake. Keep reading to learn why.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/twprod.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/stop.png\" alt=\"Stop Treating Pinterest Like A Social Media Platform\" class=\"wp-image-5985 lazyload\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-news-isn-t-news-on-pinterest\"><b>The News Isn\u2019t News On Pinterest.<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Something newsworthy happens. You want to know and share real-time information on the event. There\u2019s a good chance you\u2019ll be heading to Twitter to check the trending topics, retweet news source, and stay up-to-date with what\u2019s happening. Or, you might open up Facebook to see what your friends have to say about the event. But I\u2019m willing to bet your Pinterest feed will <strong>not<\/strong> be one of the tabs you check.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In fact, when I checked the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sharedcount.com\/#url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.cnn.com%2F2015%2F05%2F04%2Fpolitics%2Fmike-huckabee-2016-presidential-announcement%2Findex.html\">Shared Count<\/a> of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2015\/05\/04\/politics\/mike-huckabee-2016-presidential-announcement\/index.html\">CNN article<\/a>&nbsp;discussing the trending topic of Mike Huckabee&#8217;s bid for the US presidency, I found that there were plenty of shares but&nbsp;<b>no one<\/b>&nbsp;pinned the article:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sharedcount.com\/#url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.cnn.com%2F2015%2F05%2F04%2Fpolitics%2Fmike-huckabee-2016-presidential-announcement%2Findex.html\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/twprod.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/Screen-Shot-2015-05-05-at-1.35.49-PM-copy.png\" alt=\"Shared Count from CNN\" class=\"wp-image-5986 lazyload\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><em>But why is Pinterest ignored when it comes to the news?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Well for one, the <a href=\"https:\/\/engineering.pinterest.com\/post\/96012794429\/building-a-smarter-home-feed\">Smart Feed places emphasis on quality of content &#8211; not necessarily the timing of content<\/a>. Because of this, Pinterest\u2019s algorithms prefer to surface pins that stand the test of time in users feeds. These pins will be the ones that are helpful, are from value-adding domains, have already proven themselves on Pinterest, and will often be rich pins. With these types of high-quality pins, it actually <em><strong>does<\/strong><\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tailwindapp.com\/pinterest-scheduling-and-publishing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">make sense to schedule&nbsp;them<\/a>&nbsp;to go out&nbsp;when your audience is online since they will be surfaced higher in the feed. However, once a pin is on Pinterest it can surface in search results for months &#8211; or even years &#8211; after it was pinned. So, if I pinned the article about Mike Huckabee and it surfaced in a user&#8217;s search result on US presidents&nbsp;2 years from now, that user would just end up with a puzzled look rather than their desired result.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not only does the Smart Feed work against time-sensitive articles, but Pinterest users also tend to focus on the positive aspects of life and leave the controversial topics to other networks. Often pinners are planning for a major life event or planning for a better future. They\u2019re coming to Pinterest to be inspired and find something that can make their life better. The last thing they want to interrupt their search for the perfect vacation destination is a fight over Mike Huckabee &#8211; regardless of what political side they may stand on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-images-gt-text\"><b>Images &gt; Text.<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Taking a scroll through your Facebook and Twitter feeds, you might notice that the sites&nbsp;are pretty text heavy. Sure, you\u2019ll probably see an inspiring quote from a brand and some pictures from your friends night out, but other than that the sites are almost entirely text-based updates:<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/twprod.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/Screen-Shot-2015-05-05-at-5.35.22-PM.png\" alt=\"Twitter stream\" class=\"wp-image-5982 lazyload\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Now, take a scroll through your Pinterest feed and you will see a stream of (hopefully) eye-catching images:<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/twprod.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/Screen-Shot-2015-05-05-at-5.34.56-PM-1024x583.png\" alt=\"Pinterest feed\" class=\"wp-image-5984 lazyload\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 1024px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 1024\/583;\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>In fact, you can\u2019t create a post on Pinterest <em>without<\/em> an image &#8211; even if it\u2019s just a screenshot of some text (but please, don\u2019t do that). Although the descriptions are important on Pinterest &#8211; especially when it comes to setting yourself up for <a href=\"https:\/\/tailwindapp.com\/blog\/pinterest-seo-foundation\">Pinterest SEO<\/a> success &#8211; the images are what people are looking for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-pinterest-is-for-discovery-not-discussion\"><b>Pinterest is for discovery, not discussion.<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, perhaps Pinterest&#8217;s most important differentiating factor is <b>why<\/b> people are on the site. People are on Pinterest to discover new things, plan for a future event, or just get inspired. They are not on the site to discuss Mike Huckabee, look at your new puppy (unless it\u2019s REALLY cute) or to ignore brand advertising. They are searching for new experiences &#8211; starting a new life with their partner, planning a new place to visit, trying a new way to decorate their home or their body. The discovery side of Pinterest makes the site more equivalent to a Google or a Bing &#8211; not a Facebook or Twitter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><br><em>So am I crazy or am I right?
