In this series, I offer eleven&nbsp;guidelines to help you develop a winning Pinterest strategy from scratch.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/twprod.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/How-To-Develop-A-Winning-Pintrest-Strategy-From-Scratch-729x1024.png\" alt=\"How To Develop A Winning Pinterest Strategy From Scratch\" class=\"wp-image-6078 lazyload\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 729px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 729\/1024;\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-1-decide-who-your-core-audience-is\">1) Decide Who Your Core Audience Is<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The first thing you need to do when developing a Pinterest strategy is to determine who your audience is and whether your audience is on Pinterest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To find out if people are interested in what you are selling, type in some search terms that are related to your industry in the Pinterest search bar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, if you happen to be in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mcngmarketing.com\/why-banks-fail-at-using-pinterest\">banking industry<\/a> then you may want to type in search terms such as, &#8220;money saving tips&#8221; or &#8220;how to pay down your debt&#8221;. Look at the variety of pins that pop up in the search and notice if the first few results have hundreds or thousands of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tailwindapp.com\/smartloop\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pinterest repins<\/a>. If those pins are popular, then there\u2019s an existing audience for your services or products on Pinterest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/twprod.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/How-to-Save-Money.png\" alt=\"How to Save Money\" class=\"wp-image-6075 lazyload\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If not, that doesn\u2019t mean that Pinterest isn\u2019t right for your business, it just means that you\u2019re venturing into new territory and it may require some time to test it out. You may find success and you may not. But, unfortunately, there\u2019s no guaranteed way to know if your business will take off on Pinterest without at least trying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My suggestion is to pin at least once a day, <a href=\"https:\/\/mbsy.co\/tailwind\/274047\">which can easily be scheduled using Tailwind<\/a>, and to give it six months. What you\u2019re looking for is whether referral traffic from Pinterest steadily increases as you pin each week and to see if specific types of pins are generating a lot of repins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-2-determine-your-goals-for-pinterest\">2) Determine Your Goals for Pinterest<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>What are your initial goals when you are using Pinterest? Is it to drive more e-mail signups? Are you looking to get more sales from Pinterest? Or is your business relatively new so you want people to know you exist?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The most important question you can ask yourself when you are setting up your goals is to ask why that goal is important for your business. You have to ask yourself the <a href=\"https:\/\/tailwindapp.com\/blog\/questions-for-pinterest-marketing\">tough questions about Pinterest<\/a>. If you don\u2019t know why it\u2019s important then you shouldn\u2019t measure it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Deciding your major goals will help you get clear about the type of pins you want to create, what type of analytics you should look at, and the type of descriptions to use for your pins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-3-plan-out-your-pinterest-boards\">3) Plan Out Your Pinterest Boards<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Unlike social networks Twitter and Facebook, where followers can only follow one feed, Pinterest users can follow all your boards (similar to categories) or they may choose to follow specific ones that resonate most with them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you create a board titled, \u201cWedding Dresses\u201d and another board titled \u201cWedding Flowers\u201d then pinners can choose to follow one or the other or both.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Each board you create should have a different theme and be of interest to your core audience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You may also have secondary audiences that you want to target, and Pinterest is perfect for that. You can create boards for those secondary audiences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An example of this is <a href=\"https:\/\/matadornetwork.com\">Matador Network<\/a>. Their core audience is young adults who are interested in learning more about travel and culture. So they create boards that focus on travel tips from pros, traveling to Asia, and Fun World Culture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pinterest.com\/matadornetwork\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/twprod.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/Boards-on-Pinterest.png\" alt=\"Boards on Pinterest\" class=\"wp-image-6079 lazyload\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But Matador Network also runs a travel journalism school, so they have boards that focus on their travel photography and travel writing school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not all boards need to be related to your business goals. You can also create boards that are designed to show off the personality of the company, similar in the way that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.constantcontact.com\">Constant Contact<\/a> does.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pinterest.com\/constantcontact\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/twprod.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/Constant-Contact.png\" alt=\"Constant Contact\" class=\"wp-image-6076 lazyload\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I strongly advise that you don\u2019t create boards just because they are popular topics on Pinterest. Don\u2019t create a food\/recipe board if your business has no relationship with food and recipes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When developing your Pinterest strategy, try to plan out at least 10 different boards to start that are important to your audience. You can always add more boards later on as you gain insights into what your audiences are pinning and the type of pins that help them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-4-get-your-blog-started\">4) Get Your Blog Started<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>I have worked with many businesses that still don\u2019t have a blog but are interested in using Pinterest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They have some amazing products, but the truth is very few people would ever think of searching for their products on Pinterest by name and will probably be squeezed out of search results by pins that have thousands of repins and have been around for years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, you can have a product shot of a television and try to promote it, and compete with the hundreds of thousands of television pins out there, or you can create a blog post with a unique image that is titled, \u201cWhat exactly is 4K on a TV?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When you create a blog post and you create a pinnable image (we will be talking about this further down) you are taking the time to educate your customers and build trust. When that reader goes to your website, you can put in photos of your television that offers 4K. Yes, you are doing your own product placement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By having a blog, you can get people back to your website and connect with them in a meaningful way. Once you have great blog content, then it\u2019s a matter of creating some great pins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-5-do-you-have-an-intelligent-way-of-driving-traffic-back-from-pinterest\">5) Do You Have an Intelligent Way of Driving Traffic Back from Pinterest?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Before you decide to have a Pinterest page, do you have enough resources that people will be interested in?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Do you enough blog posts where you can drive people back and educate them about your product?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Do you have a place for people to sign up for e-mails that\u2019s clearly visible on your site so that all that Pinterest traffic isn\u2019t wasted?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Is your website mobile friendly? Eighty percent of daily usage happens within <a href=\"https:\/\/tailwindapp.com\/blog\/mobile-pinterest-marketing\">Pinterest mobile<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Do you have enough pictures to last you for the next 6 months instead of repining the same product photos again and again?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>I encourage you to start on a Pinterest strategy as soon as possible, however if you don\u2019t get the results you\u2019re looking for, it\u2019s a possibility that you don\u2019t have the fundamentals covered yet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-6-determine-how-you-will-make-visuals\">6) Determine How You Will Make Visuals<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019m not a graphic designer, but there are definitely some great tools out there that can help you get started in designing visually wonderful Pins. This includes tools like<a href=\"http:\/\/www.tailwindapp.com\/create\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> Tailwind Create!<\/a> With our free tool, you can generate hundreds of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tailwindapp.com\/templates\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pinterest templates<\/a> personalized to your brand, content type and industry with just one click.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You may find it useful to have visual brand consistency so that people recognize your work right away. Rebekah Radice does a great job. So does <a href=\"https:\/\/www.manlypinteresttips.com\">Jeff Sieh<\/a> of the Manly Pinterest Tips Show<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pinterest.com\/pin\/232779874466625171\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/twprod.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/Rebekkah-Raddice-627x1024.jpg\" alt=\"Rebekkah Raddice\" class=\"wp-image-6077 lazyload\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 627px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 627\/1024;\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But when creating visual for Pinterest make sure that you use long images (3:2) length:width, Canva has a template just for Pinterest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are going to be using text overlay, please ensure that the fonts are visible on mobile devices.
