Not low-ranking — invisible, because none of them contains a phrase anyone would ever type into a search box. And boards aren’t decoration: the board is the context Pinterest reads for every Pin sitting on it. Pinterest’s own creator team puts it plainly:

“Pinterest can’t serve what it doesn’t understand — you must include keywords for discovery.”
— Pinterest, creator webinar, December 2025

Most board advice you’ll find is about naming boards more cleverly — after the fact, once the board already exists and is already full. That’s backwards, and it’s why the advice rarely changes anything. (The complete guide to Pinterest SEO is here if you want the whole discipline; how Pinterest ranks what it finds is here.)

The workflow that works runs the other way: decide the keyword first, then build the board around it.

What a Board Actually Does for Search

Three jobs, and only the first is widely understood.

1. It’s a keyword slot. The board’s name and description are key positions for keyword placement — along with the Pin title, Pin description, image alt text, image filename and in the content of the linked URL. Weaker than the Pin title, but it applies to every Pin on the board at once, which is what makes it efficient.

2. It’s a topical signal. A board full of Pins about one coherent subject tells Pinterest what that subject is far more clearly than any individual Pin can. A board holding forty unrelated things tells it very little about any of them, which will result in lower search ranking scores for the keywords you’re trying to win. Tightly defined boards are better than broadly defined ones when it comes to Pinterest SEO.

3. It’s a destination. Boards surface in search results themselves and get followed as units — one reason Pinterest behaves like a search engine rather than a social network. A well-named board keeps working long after the Pins on it were published — which fits how Pinterest behaves generally. In Tailwind’s 2025 Pinterest Marketing Benchmark Report — 1.2M+ Pins across 17,000+ accounts — more than 60% of recent saves went to Pins over a year old. Pick the keyword before the board exists

Start from a term with real demand and the right kind of demand — one you’ve validated against actual Pinterest search data rather than picked because it sounded right. (The full research workflow is here; the short version is that guessing, and asking a general-purpose AI, both fail for the same reason — neither can see what people actually search on Pinterest.)

Two checks before you commit a board to a term:

Is there demand? Use the Tailwind keyword research tool to check if the term you want to target has real search demand. If it doesn’t, the tool can help you find a better substitute, as well as more niche adjacent terms that can fit future Pins on that board.

Is it the right kind of demand? Shopping searches and idea searches return different results pages, and a board built around one won’t serve the other. Tailwind’s keyword research tool is the place to check this, too.

Boards are a bigger commitment than a Pin. A Pin you can re-target in two minutes; a board you’ll be filling for months. (If you’re starting from zero, here’s how to create one.)

2. Name the board using the keyword

Not a variation of it. Not a cleverer version. The board name should include the phrase people search, in the words they search it in. It can even be the phrase exactly that you want to target.

Instead of

Name it

Cozy Corners

Living Room Ideas On a Budget

Our Products

Handmade Ceramic Mugs

Yum

Easy Weeknight Dinner Recipes

Sarah’s Favorites

Neutral Nursery Decor

This feels less charming and it is. It’s also the difference between a board (and Pins!) that can be found through search vs only browsed by people already on your profile. For example, check out the difference in search volume for “cozy corners” and related terms vs “living room ideas on a budget”:

Near-zero search traffic for “cozy corners”

Compare to: Thousands of searches per month for “living room ideas on a budget” – leading to an audience many times that size who can see your Pins in their feed based on previously searching this term

Most Pinterest users who see and engage with your Pins will never visit your profile or boards directly.

That’s ok – it just means you need to optimize for your Pins to be discoverable on their own, with Board SEO as a contributing factor to help.

If you want the naming craft — length, capitalization, how to stay recognizable while staying findable — our board names post covers it properly, and there’s a free board title generator if you’re stuck.

3. Write a description that reads like a sentence

The board description is the most-skipped free keyword slot on Pinterest. Two or three real sentences describing what someone will find on the board, naturally including the target keyword and a couple of closely related terms.

Not a keyword list. Our benchmark data on Pin descriptions found the most viral used five or fewer keywords and ran 220–232 characters — that study measured Pins rather than boards, but stuffing underperforms in both places for the same reason.

4. Build the board around the keyword — from the start

Here’s the step most people can’t do by hand.

Here’s how keyword-first board plans actually die. You pick a good term, name the board well — and then you spend the next two months filling it with weakly related Pins. This isn’t intentional – it’s just that weeks after creating the Board, the keyword you selected isn’t top of mind anymore, so you start scheduling to the board by feel. The name stays. The targeting quietly drifts.

In Tailwind, once you’ve saved a keyword in Keyword Research, you can create a Pinterest board directly from that saved keyword, with only two clicks from the term you already selected:

1. Go to your saved keywords page and click to select the term

2. Click the “Create Board” button at the bottom of the page. Tailwind will suggest Pins to use to start the Board, choosing from Pins Pinterest already sees as tightly connected to your target keyword.

By establishing the Board focus tightly in Pinterest’s eyes, you help protect the Board from topical drift. This helps your Pins that you scheduled and publish to the Board later to rank for your intended term.

From there, the saved keyword keeps traveling: it auto-fills when you set up SmartPin for the pages that board serves, and flows into Tailwind Ghostwriter when it drafts Pin titles, descriptions, and alt text. Decide the keyword once; it shows up everywhere it should. (Glance at the keywords at review time regardless — auto-fill is a real capability, not a guarantee.)

And to be explicit about the boundary, because it matters: you still choose every Pin that publishes. Pinterest’s developer terms require a human to select each Pin, and that’s the right design anyway. This is what AI-assisted Pinterest marketing means in practice — AI is a tool inside a Pinterest-results workflow, not a replacement for one. The machine removes the repetition. You keep the judgment.

5. Use sections for the sub-topics

Once a board earns real depth, sections keep it coherent instead of letting it sprawl into the forty-unrelated-things problem. A “Small Living Room Ideas” board might carry sections for layout, storage, lighting, and color.

You can create, rename, and delete boards and sections without leaving Tailwind, and schedule Pins directly into a section rather than dropping them at the board root — which is what keeps the structure real rather than aspirational. (More on board sections here.)

One more piece of the same machinery: Board Lists, part of Pin Scheduler, let you save groups of boards and sections so a single Pin can be scheduled to several at once instead of being duplicated by hand for each destination. Useful the moment your board structure stops being small.

What to Do With the Boards You Already Have

Most people reading this have twenty boards, and about four of them are named anything findable. The instinct is to bulldoze. Don’t.

Rename, don’t delete. An existing board carries accumulated saves, followers, and history. Renaming it and rewriting its description keeps all of that and fixes the signal. Deleting throws it away and starts you at zero. Deletion is for genuinely off-topic boards that will never serve your account — and even then, it’s the last option, not the first.

A sane cleanup pass:

List your boards and mark each one: findable (name is something people search), fixable (right content, wrong name), or off-topic.

Fix the fixables first — rename to the validated keyword, rewrite the description. Highest return for the least work.

Consolidate near-duplicates. Three thin boards on the same subject compete with each other; one deep one doesn’t. (Merging and organizing boards is covered here.)

Add sections to anything that’s grown past coherence.

Leave the off-topic ones alone unless they’re actively confusing your profile’s subject. A dormant board costs you very little. (While you’re in there, the profile checklist is worth ten minutes.)

Set expectations honestly: renaming a board doesn’t produce a result next week. Pinterest re-reads the signal over time, and this is a compounding platform — roughly 20% of fresh Pins show no distribution even after a week (Benchmark Report, Part 3), which is the indexing rhythm you’re working with. Give a board cleanup two to three months before you judge it, and measure against your own prior numbers rather than someone else’s screenshot.

The Short Version

Boards are a keyword slot, a topical signal, and a destination. Name them accordingly.

Pick the keyword before the board exists. Validate demand and the kind of demand.

Name the board the phrase people search — not a cleverer version of it.

Write a real description. Two or three sentences, five or fewer keywords, no stuffing.

Create the board from the saved keyword so the board and its target can’t drift apart.

Sections for depth. The board name and description together are a keyword slot that applies to every Pin on the board, and boards themselves appear in Pinterest search results. A board named for something people actually search is findable; one named “Our Favorites” is effectively invisible to search, however good the Pins on it are.

How many keywords should a Pinterest board description have?

Write two or three natural sentences with the target keyword and a couple of closely related terms — not a keyword list. Tailwind’s 2025 Pinterest Marketing Benchmark Report (1.2M+ Pins, late-2024 windows) found the most viral Pin descriptions used five or fewer keywords and averaged 220–232 characters. That study measured Pins, not boards — but stuffing reads badly to a human either way, and there’s no reason to think a board description is the exception.

Should I delete Pinterest boards that aren’t performing?

Usually not. Renaming keeps the board’s accumulated saves, followers, and history while fixing the signal that was holding it back; deleting throws all of that away. Reserve deletion for boards that are genuinely off-topic for your account, and treat it as the last option rather than the first.

How many Pinterest boards should I have?

Enough to cover the topics you want to be found for, with real depth in each — not a number. Several thin boards on the same subject compete with each other and dilute the topical signal; one deeper board with sections does the same job better. Depth beats breadth.

What are Pinterest board sections for?

Sub-topics within a board that’s grown big enough to sprawl. They keep a board coherent — a “Small Living Room Ideas” board might have sections for layout, storage, lighting, and color. You can create, rename, and delete sections and schedule Pins directly into them from inside Tailwind, so the structure stays real rather than aspirational.

How long does it take for a renamed board to rank?

Longer than you’d like. Pinterest is a compounding channel — roughly 20% of fresh Pins show no distribution even after about a week (Tailwind’s 2025 Benchmark Report, 1.2M+ Pins), and boards re-establish their signal gradually as new coherent Pins accumulate. Give a cleanup two to three months and judge it on steady week-over-week movement against your own prior performance.

Related Resources

Pinterest SEO in 2026: The Complete Guide to Getting Found in Pinterest Search

How to Do Pinterest Keyword Research (With Real Search Data)

Pinterest Board Ideas: Names That Get Found

How to Create a Pinterest Board

How to Organize Pinterest Boards

How to Use Pinterest Board Sections

Board Title Idea Generator (free tool)

How to Create a Pinterest Board (course)

Tailwind Keyword Research (real Pinterest data)

Pinterest Keyword Tools Compared: What Most Don’t Tell You About Their Data

Pinterest Keywords: The Ultimate Guide

How to Write the Best Pinterest Descriptions

Pinterest Scheduling and Publishing

Introducing SmartPin: Fresh Pins Each Week

The Tailwind 2025 Benchmark Study (1.2M+ Pins)

Pinterest Profile Checklist

Your Boards Are Telling Pinterest Something.
