The volume looks great. You build a post around it, write a good Pin title, design a nice image, and publish. Months pass. Impressions are fine. Clicks are not. You conclude the content wasn’t good enough, or the design was off, or Pinterest just doesn’t work for your niche.

The content was probably fine. What happened is that you pointed a blog post at a search where everyone else on that results page is selling something — and the people running that search came to buy, not to read.

Volume told you how many people search. It said nothing about what kind of thing they expect to find. That second question decides whether your page can win at all, and it’s the one most Pinterest keyword advice never mentions — including, often, the advice on how to find the keywords in the first place. (The complete guide to Pinterest SEO is here if you’d rather have the whole picture first.)

The Two Kinds of Pinterest Search

Pinterest searches sort, roughly, into two intents.

Shopping searches. The person wants to buy. They’re looking for a thing that exists, that costs money, that they can have. The results page fills up with product listings. Someone searching for a specific style of planner, or prints for a gallery wall, is in this mode — and Pinterest is unusually good at sending those people to a store.

Idea searches. The person wants inspiration or an answer. They’re gathering, planning, learning, deciding. The results page fills up with articles, guides, room shots, how-tos. Someone searching for ways to arrange a small living room is in this mode.

Both carry serious volume. Pinterest reports 80 billion-plus searches a month, roughly half of them commercial in nature (Pinterest, Q1 2026 earnings call) — which means the other half is very much not, and both halves are enormous.

The mistake isn’t preferring one. It’s not knowing which one you’re targeting.

<img fetchpriority="high" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-large wp-image-14143" src="https://www.tailwindapp.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/pinterest-shopping-vs-idea-keywords-pin-search-types-683x1024.jpg" alt="Two-panel comparison: shopping searches mean the person wants to buy and finds product listings; idea searches mean the person wants inspiration or an answer and finds articles, guides and how-tos. Run a few searches and you’ll see it — some terms come back as a wall of product listings, others as articles and room shots. That character is stable enough to plan around, and your content either matches it or it doesn’t. (The four factors Pinterest names as driving distribution are here — Pinterest doesn’t publish how they’re weighted, and anyone who tells you otherwise is guessing.)

If you’re promoting…

And you target…

What happens

A product page

A shopping keyword

You’re the kind of result the searcher came for. The searcher scrolls past.

That table is the whole piece. The rest is how to tell which is which, and what to do about the awkward cases.

It also reframes what a “good” keyword is. A high-volume keyword whose intent doesn’t match your page isn’t a stretch goal you might grow into. It’s the wrong keyword, and more effort against it makes things worse, not better — because every Pin you point at it is a Pin you didn’t point at a search you could win.

How You Actually Tell Them Apart

Three ways, in ascending order of reliability.

Guess from the phrasing. Sometimes obvious — roughly what most keyword guides leave you to do. “Buy,” “cheap,” “best,” a specific product noun — usually shopping. “How to,” “ideas,” “inspiration” — usually ideas. This gets you maybe two-thirds of the way, and the third it misses is where the money is, because ambiguous head terms are exactly the high-volume ones you most want to get right.

Search it yourself and read the results page. More reliable. Run the term and look at what actually comes back — mostly products, or mostly articles? This genuinely works, and it’s free. The cost is time: it’s one search at a time, forever, and you have to do it again for every candidate on your list. It’s the same ceiling every manual method runs into.

Read the intent score. Pinterest does not publish an intent signal — but Tailwind has the data, and Keyword Research scores shopping intent on every keyword, shown as a shopping-cart icon that gets darker as intent rises. You can filter an entire keyword list by it in one move.

That last one is the difference between checking three keywords and sorting three hundred. The signal that decides your Pinterest strategy is one only approved partner access to Pinterest’s search data can surface. You can approximate it by hand. You can’t do it at scale by hand.

What you cannot do is ask a general-purpose AI. ChatGPT is not a good tool for this. It answers instantly and confidently, and it guesses confidently — from how often words co-occur in open-web text rather than from what people actually search on Pinterest, so its answers are nearly always incorrect or incomplete for Pinterest specifically. It fails especially on newer trends, since training data often runs a couple of years behind. It’s a genuinely useful tool for drafting the Pin copy once you’ve decided. It is not a tool for deciding. (The honest comparison of every option, including ours, is here.)

That split is the whole shape of AI-assisted Pinterest marketing as we practise it: AI is a tool inside a Pinterest-results workflow, not a replacement for one. It drafts; the data decides; you approve each Pin that publishes.

<img decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-large wp-image-14144 lazyload" data-src="https://www.tailwindapp.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/pinterest-shopping-vs-idea-keywords-pin-identify-intent-683x1024.jpg" alt="Three methods for identifying keyword intent, in rising reliability: guess from phrasing, read the results page, and use the shopping-intent score in Keyword Research to filter a list. These are Pinterest search volumes, not Google’s — the two are not comparable and shouldn’t be read as interchangeable.)

Notice what these have in common: they’re specific, and several of them name a marketplace. That’s a buyer, not a browser. If you sell in one of these categories and your Pinterest strategy is built entirely around inspirational idea keywords, you are working the wrong half of the platform for the pages that make you money. (The Etsy-specific playbook is here.)

The reverse mistake is just as common and less discussed: a publisher or blogger chasing shopping keywords because the volumes look bigger, then wondering why beautifully written posts get impressions and no clicks.

One caveat for anyone reading those Etsy rows and getting ideas: what you can measure depends on whether you own the domain your buyers land on. If you sell through a marketplace storefront, Pinterest’s conversion tracking isn’t available to you, and the honest play is traffic and discovery rather than conversion-optimized advertising. The full version of that constraint is here — worth reading before you plan a budget around any of this.

The Honest Complications

Three things the clean version above glosses over.

1. Plenty of keywords are genuinely mixed. A term can pull a results page that’s half products and half ideas. That isn’t a problem to solve — it’s information. A mixed term means the search is contested by both content types, so the question becomes which of your pages should answer it, and you should pick one rather than pointing both at it and competing with yourself.

2. Intent doesn’t override the funnel. Pinterest reports that 80% of weekly Pinners are inspired by the shopping experience (Pinterest Business, accessed May 2026) — the audience is commercially minded even when the specific search isn’t. An idea keyword can absolutely lead to a sale later. What it won’t do is lead to a sale from that impression. Set your expectations by the intent, and let the idea keywords do upper-funnel work rather than judging them on clicks.

3. Volume still matters — it’s just second. Perfect intent match on a term nobody searches sends you nobody. The order of operations is: filter by intent to find keywords your page type can win, then sort those by volume. Not the other way round.

What To Do With This on Monday

Sort your pages by type — product/service pages in one column, articles and guides in the other. (Some pages are honestly both. Pick the one that pays.)

Pull your existing keyword targets and check the intent on each one.

Find the mismatches. Any product page pointed at an idea keyword, or any post pointed at a shopping keyword, is a page working against its own results page. These are usually the pages you’ve quietly written off as underperformers.

Re-point, don’t rewrite. Most mismatches don’t need new content. They need a different keyword — which means a new Pin title, description, alt text, image filename, and often a better-matched board name and description.

Set the keyword at the page level and let it travel. Save the corrected keyword against the page so it flows into the Pins you make for it from then on, rather than being re-decided every time you sit down. (The full research workflow is here.)

Then make Pins with real variation for the re-pointed pages, and give it two to three months. In Tailwind’s 2025 Pinterest Marketing Benchmark Report — 1.2M+ Pins, late-2024 windows — about 20% of fresh Pins had no distribution after roughly a week. Judge from the phrasing (fast, unreliable on the ambiguous high-volume terms). Run the search and read what comes back (reliable, but one keyword at a time). Or read a shopping-intent score — Pinterest doesn’t publish one, but Tailwind’s Keyword Research scores it on every keyword and lets you filter a whole list at once.

Should I target high-volume keywords even if the intent doesn’t match my page?

No. A high-volume keyword whose results page is full of a content type you don’t have isn’t an ambitious target — it’s the wrong target, and effort against it compounds in the wrong direction. Filter by intent first to find the keywords your page type can win, then sort those by volume.

Can one Pinterest keyword be both?

Yes, and mixed-intent terms are common. Treat that as information rather than a problem: it means both content types are competing for the same search, so decide which of your pages should answer it and point that one page at it, instead of entering two of your own pages against each other.

Do idea keywords ever lead to sales?

Often — just not from that impression. Pinterest reports 80% of weekly Pinners are inspired by the shopping experience, so the audience is commercially minded throughout. Idea keywords do upper-funnel work: discovery, saves, and the slow build of familiarity. Judge them on saves and audience growth, not on same-session clicks to a product page.

Where does Pinterest publish shopping intent data?

It doesn’t. Pinterest shares its search data with approved partners, and Tailwind’s Keyword Research, including its shopping-intent scores, is built on that partner data. If a tool shows you Pinterest “intent” and isn’t on Pinterest’s approved partner list, it’s worth asking where the number came from before you plan a quarter around it.

Related Resources

Pinterest SEO in 2026: The Complete Guide to Getting Found in Pinterest Search

Pinterest Keyword Tools Compared: What Most Don’t Tell You About Their Data

How to Do Pinterest Keyword Research (With Real Search Data)

Pinterest for Ecommerce

How to Promote Your Etsy Shop on Pinterest

Etsy Marketing Strategy

Rich Pins (course)

Tailwind Keyword Research (real Pinterest data)

Free Pinterest Keyword Tool

Pinterest Isn’t a Social Network — It’s a Search Engine

Pinterest Keywords: The Ultimate Guide

How to Write the Best Pinterest Descriptions

Pinterest Board Ideas: Names That Get Found

The Tailwind 2025 Benchmark Study (1.2M+ Pins)

Pinterest Impressions, Clicks and More (course)

Two Keywords, Same Volume, Opposite Strategies You research a keyword.
