You spend an afternoon hunting for keywords. You end up with a tidy list of forty terms. You feel productive. Then the list goes into a spreadsheet, and three weeks later you’re writing a Pin description from memory anyway — because the list never told you which keyword belonged to which page.

The finding step gets all the attention. It’s the smaller half of the job.

Research is finished when every keyword you chose is attached to the specific page it’s supposed to rank, and is flowing into the Pins you make for that page. Until then you have a list, not a strategy. This piece covers the whole loop.

Step 1: Decide What You’re Researching For

Start with pages, not keywords. Open a document and list the pages you actually want traffic to — your five or ten best posts, your key product or service pages, the things you’d be glad to have found.

This sounds like a throat-clearing step and it isn’t. It’s what stops you from collecting interesting keywords with nowhere to send them, which is the single most common way this work gets wasted. Every keyword you keep needs a page waiting for it. (If those are product pages, Step 4’s shopping-intent filter matters most for you.)

It also helps to know what this work actually buys you. Keywords are how Pinterest indexes a Pin; indexing is what makes it eligible to be discovered in search; discovery is what produces impressions — and only then can anyone save it or click through. Get the keyword wrong and you’ve capped every number downstream of it. (The full mechanism is here.)

Step 2: Understand What You’re Searching Against

Before you look anything up, one mental model saves a lot of confusion later.

Pinterest’s interest graph is a semantic model of demand — it organizes what people look for into related terms and clusters. It isn’t a transcript of every phrase ever typed. So when a phrasing comes back with no meaningful volume, the useful reading is not “nobody wants this.” It’s “this particular phrasing isn’t one of the terms demand is organized under” — and the demand is nearly always sitting under a closely related term.

That’s why the instruction below is always look at the related terms, never keep trying variations of your phrasing until one works. (The full explanation of what a zero actually means is here.)

Step 3: Look It Up — and Know What Each Method Can and Can’t See

There are only a few honest ways to arrive at a Pinterest keyword.

The Pinterest search bar. Type a topic and read the suggestions. It’s free, it’s genuinely Pinterest, and it’s what most Pinterest courses teach. If Pinterest is still an experiment for you, it’s a legitimate place to start.

Two things to know before you build a habit on it. The first is the one that stops people: it is enormously time-consuming. An afternoon of typing and note-taking per topic, then the same again for the next topic, and the next, indefinitely. The second is quieter and more expensive: the suggestion set is small, so the highest-value terms frequently never appear in it at all, no matter how patiently you hunt.

Here’s what that costs, concretely. Research “couch” by hand and you will never discover that the synonym “sofa” carries roughly 1.4M monthly Pinterest searches — or that “grey couch living room” carries 122K+ while the intuitive phrasing “couches living room” registers no meaningful volume at all (Tailwind Keyword Research data, July 2026; volumes move, so check current numbers in the tool). In our data, most of the interesting, higher-volume, more granular terms don’t surface in those suggestions. Which means the method most courses recommend systematically misses the biggest opportunities, and you have no way of knowing what you missed.

Asking a general-purpose AI. This is the tempting shortcut, and it’s the worst option on the list for this specific job. ChatGPT is not a good tool for choosing Pinterest keywords: it guesses confidently from how often words co-occur in its training data — which is open-web text, not Pinterest search data — so its answers are nearly always incorrect or incomplete for Pinterest specifically. It fails especially badly on newer trends, since training data often runs a couple of years behind. And the failure mode isn’t obviously-bad keywords, which you’d catch. It’s confident ones, which you won’t.

Where AI genuinely earns its place: brainstorming content angles, organizing a list you’ve already validated, summarizing research, and drafting the copy once the targets are chosen. Draft with AI. Decide with data. (We compared every option, including ourselves, here.)

Real Pinterest search data. Actual volumes, trending status, related keywords and clusters, and a shopping-intent score — through approved partner access to Pinterest’s own search data. This is what Keyword Research is; a median search returns in about 32 seconds (Tailwind company data, measured June 2026), and there’s a limited one-time free preview if you want to see the difference before deciding anything.

One habit worth building regardless of what you use: Pinterest publishes an official list of approved partners. Before you connect any tool to your Pinterest account, check that it’s on that list — and don’t use tools that aren’t. Tools that harvest Pinterest’s interface without approval are collecting data in a way Pinterest’s terms don’t permit, and many aren’t straight with you about where their numbers come from.

<img fetchpriority="high" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-large wp-image-14136" src="https://www.tailwindapp.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/pinterest-keyword-research-pin-suggestions-demand-683x1024.jpg" alt="The search bar shows suggestions. Run each candidate through three questions:

Question

What you’re looking at

Why it decides

Is there demand?

Monthly Pinterest search volume

A term nobody searches can’t send you anyone, however perfectly you’ve optimized for it

Is it the right kind of demand?

The shopping-intent score

High shopping intent means the results page fills with product listings; low means articles and ideas. Point a blog post at a product-listing search and you’ve entered a race your page can’t win

Can I realistically compete?

How specific the term is, against your account’s standing

“Home decor” is not a target. “Grey couch living room” is

That middle row is the one most people have never had access to. Pinterest doesn’t publish shopping intent — it appears in Keyword Research as a shopping-cart icon on every keyword, darker for higher intent, and you can filter your whole list by it. It’s usually the fastest way to cut a list of forty candidates to the twelve that could actually work for the pages you’re promoting. (Shopping searches and idea searches reward different kinds of pages, so match the filter to what you’re promoting.)

Keyword Research also surfaces a single Resonance Score per keyword, so you can compare candidates on one number rather than juggling several.

A note on your own judgment. No tool decides for you. Real data makes the decision possible; it doesn’t make it. Whether “sofa,” “living room sectional,” or “grey couch living room” is right depends on what your page is actually about — and that’s yours to know.

Step 5: Go Sideways Before You Go Deeper

The single highest-yield move in Pinterest keyword research is the one people skip: after you look up your obvious term, look at its related keywords and clusters before you look up your next obvious term.

This is where the synonym you’d never have typed lives. It’s where the more specific phrasing with more volume than the head term lives. And it’s the only reliable way to find out where demand actually sits when your first guess comes back thin.

A practical rule: for every term you look up deliberately, expect to keep at least one you didn’t go looking for.

Step 6: Save Them — and Attach Them to Pages

Here’s where research stops being a list.

Save the keywords you’re keeping, then attach each one to the specific page you want it to rank for. This is a real step in Keyword Research, not a metaphor for a spreadsheet column, and it’s what converts the research into something the rest of your workflow can use:

Saved keywords auto-fill when you set up SmartPin, so the Pins drafted for a page are built around the terms you chose for that page — rather than you re-typing them from memory at review time, or forgetting.

They flow into Tailwind Ghostwriter when it drafts Pin titles, descriptions, and alt text.

You can create a Pinterest board directly from a saved keyword, so the board starts out built around the term you validated (if it ever fails to create, just make the board yourself using the keyword as its name).

Set the keyword once at the page level and it travels with everything you make for that page. That’s the entire point, and it’s the step that makes the difference between research you did and research you use.

(Two honest notes: auto-fill is a real capability, not a guarantee — glance at the keywords at review time. And whichever way the keywords arrive, you still choose each Pin that publishes. Pinterest’s developer terms require it, and it’s the right design regardless — this is what AI-assisted Pinterest marketing actually looks like in a workflow. AI is a tool inside a Pinterest-results workflow, not a replacement for one.)

<img decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-large wp-image-14137 lazyload" data-src="https://www.tailwindapp.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/pinterest-keyword-research-pin-keywords-workflow-683x1024.jpg" alt="Keyword workflow: Research, Save, Attach to page, Into your Pins. Neither a trick nor a trap; just a less readable way to say a keyword you could have written into the sentence.

Step 8: Let Your Impressions Tell You What Worked

Keyword research is a loop, not a one-off. Pinterest’s own creator guidance offers a clean read on the metrics: saves tell you whether the content is interesting, outbound clicks tell you whether it’s useful, and impressions tell you which keyword is working hardest (Pinterest creator webinar, December 2025).

That last one is the feedback for your next research round. The keyword pulling impressions you didn’t expect is a signal to go look at its cluster.

Give it time before you read anything: about 20% of fresh Pins show no distribution after roughly a week (Tailwind’s 2025 Pinterest Marketing Benchmark Report, 1.2M+ Pins, late-2024 windows) — that’s an indexing period, not a verdict. Look for steady week-over-week gains across the first two to three months, measured against your own prior performance.

The Whole Workflow, in One Place

List the pages you want traffic to. Keywords need destinations.

Look up your obvious terms with real Pinterest search data — not intuition, not a general-purpose AI’s guess.

Go sideways into related keywords and clusters. Keep at least one term you didn’t go looking for.

Judge on three things: volume, shopping intent, and whether you can realistically compete.

Save the keepers and attach each to its page. This is the step that makes the research usable.

Place them — title, description, alt text, filename, board name and description.

Make Pins with variation and let the queue run.

Read impressions per keyword in two to three months and go round again.

The honest starting point: look up five terms you’re certain you know the answer to. The gap between what you’d have guessed and what people actually search is usually visible inside the first five minutes — and that gap is the whole reason this workflow exists. Try it on your own topics; there’s a limited free preview to start.

Save this guide for later. Pin whichever of these fits your boards best.

<img decoding="async" width="683" height="1024" data-src="https://www.tailwindapp.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/pinterest-keyword-research-ad-spreadsheet-683x1024.jpg" class="attachment-large size-large lazyload" alt="Most Pinterest keyword research dies in a spreadsheet. The Pinterest search bar is free and genuinely Pinterest — type a topic, read the suggestions — but it costs hours per topic and its suggestion set is small enough that the highest-volume terms often never appear. Tailwind’s Keyword Research includes a limited one-time free preview, a one-time preview that shows you real search volumes and shopping intent on a handful of lookups. Both are legitimate starting points; they differ in what you spend, time or money.

Can I use ChatGPT for Pinterest keyword research?

Not for choosing what to target. ChatGPT has no access to Pinterest’s search data — it guesses from open-web word frequency, and the answers are nearly always incorrect or incomplete for Pinterest specifically, especially for newer trends, since training data often runs a couple of years behind. It’s genuinely useful for brainstorming angles, organizing a validated list, and drafting Pin copy. Draft with AI; decide with real Pinterest data.

What does it mean when a Pinterest keyword shows zero search volume?

That the exact phrasing isn’t one of the terms Pinterest’s interest graph organizes demand around — not that nobody’s interested. The graph is a semantic model of demand, not a log of every string typed into a search box. Look at the related keywords and clusters instead; the demand is almost always there under a sibling term.

How many keywords should I target per page?

One primary keyword per page, plus a small number of closely related terms used naturally in the copy. Our benchmark data found the most viral Pin descriptions used five or fewer keywords and averaged 220–232 characters. The failure mode here is stuffing, not scarcity.

What’s the difference between shopping keywords and idea keywords?

High-shopping-intent keywords return results dominated by product listings; low-intent keywords return articles and inspiration content. Volume alone won’t tell you which you’re looking at. Pinterest doesn’t publish this signal — Tailwind’s Keyword Research scores it on every keyword — and it decides whether the page you’re promoting can win the results page at all.

How often should I redo my Pinterest keyword research?

Treat it as a loop rather than a project. Do a real round when you launch a new content area or product line, then let impressions-per-keyword tell you where to look next — that’s your cheapest ongoing signal. A full revisit once or twice a year is plenty for most accounts.

Related Resources

Pinterest SEO in 2026: The Complete Guide to Getting Found in Pinterest Search

Pinterest Keyword Tools Compared: What Most Don’t Tell You About Their Data

Pinterest Keywords: The Ultimate Guide

Tailwind Keyword Research (real Pinterest data)

Free Pinterest Keyword Tool

What Is Pinterest SEO?
