These warm audiences tend to convert to website visits, sales, and email signups at a higher rate than do strangers (cold audiences). Before you run screaming from the terror that is \u201ccode,\u201d let me assure you \u2014 it is very simple, especially if you use WordPress. The code, which you get at Ads > Conversion Tracking, just needs to go on every page of your site in the tag. If you install a plugin such as <a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.org\/plugins\/insert-headers-and-footers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Insert Headers and Footers<\/a>, it will take you all of thirty seconds. Naturally, it only begins collecting data on visitors the day it\u2019s installed, so do it now!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To target your own customer or email subscribers, just import a .csv file of email addresses only. You\u2019ll want to update this file regularly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>AND you can only target an engagement audience after you have confirmed your domain. Not sure if you have done so? Pinterest sees their pinning behavior and matches them to other pinners not in your audience. This is my favorite way of expanding the good results from a highly-successful audience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Oftentimes our own audiences are pretty small, which means we can\u2019t get the reach and clicks we need. So, starting a new ad group using an actalike is a great way to find people with similar interests and behaviors and increase your impressions 30X while keeping CTR high. Ignoring keyword targeting could keep you from getting the impressions you need to get the clicks and sales you\u2019re looking for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/alisameredith.com\/pinterest-search-ads-promoted-pins-keyword-campaigns\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Until Pinterest Search Ads are available<\/a> to all, we have to lump all our keywords into one ad group with one bid. This means if you keep your bids low (as I do), your Pin may never be displayed for the more competitive keywords. Unless you have an enormous budget, you may be OK with that. If you find that some keywords that are important to you are not generating impressions, start a new ad group with a higher bid per click to generate the exposure you need.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-surprising-truth-about-keyword-targeted-promoted-pins\">The Surprising Truth About Keyword-Targeted Promoted Pins<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The funny thing about targeting by keyword with Promoted Pins is that you\u2019d think those Pins would only show up in search results, so you\u2019d reach people when they\u2019re looking for what you\u2019ve pinned. Not so!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pins targeted by keyword only often show up in the home feed, too! Knowing that \u201ckeyword\u201d targeting has more to do with the pinner\u2019s overall Pinterest behavior than their in-the-moment search really frees you up to go broad with your keywords. Maybe it would include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>blue stilettos<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>blue heels<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>high-heeled blue shoes<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>And not much more. After all, you want to make sure you give them what they are looking for to keep your click-through rate up (which, by the way, decreases the cost of your ads).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>BUT, if we know that keyword-targeted Promoted Pins are looking at overall pinner behavior (perhaps including search history, Pins engaged with, their own board names, etc.), we\u2019ll be a lot more expansive. We might include the short list above and add:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>black tie<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>what to wear on a date<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>girls night out<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>sexy shoes<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>stylish shoes<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>cocktail party<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Gucci<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Christian Louboutin<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Jimmy Choo<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>manicures<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>up-dos<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Anything that might interest someone who is interested in blue stilettos is likely fair game. Pinterest is fairly lenient here because of the way keyword targeting works, but if you get too out there \u2014 say, targeting \u201cDIY planters\u201d \u2014 your Pin will be rejected. Pinterest suggests that 100 keywords is the sweet spot, but you can get results with fewer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For instance, check out the tiles below the search bar when I perform a search&nbsp;for &#8220;black tie&#8221; on Pinterest. One of them is &#8220;Shoes.&#8221; This tells us that people who search for &#8220;black tie&#8221; are also interested in shoes \u2014 and if you scrolled down you would see quite a few (gorgeous) pairs of shoes in the results!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone size-full wp-image-11245\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/twprod.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/Screen-Shot-2017-06-13-at-4.18.03-PM.png\" alt=\"Screenshot of Pinterest search results for &quot;black tie&quot; showing an assortment of fashion Pins and related terms.\" class=\"wp-image-11245 lazyload\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Pinterest is telling me that &#8220;shoes&#8221; and &#8220;black tie&#8221; go well together!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>If your own audience is small OR you want to reach new people with your content, try using keywords to get your Pin in front of more pinners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-3-know-what-to-bid-and-what-your-daily-budget-should-be\">#3: Know What to Bid And What Your Daily Budget Should Be<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The number one question regarding Promoted Pins: \u201cHow much should I spend?\u201d What is a click worth? <a href=\"https:\/\/alisameredith.com\/much-spend-pinterest-promoted-pins\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Naturally that is different for everyone<\/a>. But one thing is for sure: you do NOT need to pay what Pinterest suggests to get results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/twprod.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/suggested-bid-pinterest.png\" alt=\"Screenshot of &quot;Maximum CPC bid&quot; set at 35 cents. There's a warning message that says &quot;Too low. Other advertisers are bidding between $1.77 and $4.38.&quot;\" class=\"wp-image-11238 lazyload\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Eek! Start off low. Even $.15\/click is often enough to get things rolling. If after a few days you notice your impressions are very low, inch that bid per click on up a dime or two. I like to keep doing that until I see it \u201ccatch\u201d or gain a bit of momentum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A note on ad groups. Your ad group is where you set your daily budget and all your targeting. It can be very tempting to break out your targeting into dozens of ad groups for easy analysis. If you have time for that, by all means, go ahead, but be aware that if your ad groups are below about $5\/day, it\u2019s going to take a long time to get a clear picture of what is working and what isn\u2019t. Those are Promoted Pins that, when you click on them, bring you directly to the website, skipping the expected step of the close up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"mceTemp\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>One tap will generate more clicks through to your site, naturally. And more click-throughs can lower your cost per click (Pinterest rewards ads that perform). But they can also result in a much higher spend without many more conversions ON your site.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you want to try them, start out with campaigns that target people who already know you \u2014 your visitors and your customers. These people may find the experience of being whisked away from Pinterest before they expect if they know and trust you already.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-5-keep-things-fresh-update-your-creatives\">#5: Keep Things Fresh \u2014 Update Your Creatives<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Sometimes a Promoted Pin will hum along for a while and then, all of a sudden, your click-through rate falls through the floor. So disappointing! Rather than just turn it off, why not create a new image for it? It could be that ad fatigue is setting in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A snappy new graphic could be just the thing to bring back the excitement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;You may offer the best product, article, or service in the world, but if you fail to take the time to create quality, eye-catching visuals, pinners will scroll on by, and your competitors will cash in. It\u2019s a little tricky to set up, but so so worth it. If you choose to just watch clicks to your site, you\u2019ll never know if your Promoted Pin traffic is converting to sales or leads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, if you&#8217;re more interested in click-through rates and cost per click, that&#8217;s OK too! The dashboard serves all that up to you nicely. If you&#8217;re not happy with the results (look for .2-.3% CTR), there are lots of things you can do:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-simple-tweaks\">Simple Tweaks:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Turn off targeting that is ineffective or disproportionately costly.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you&#8217;re not spending your budget, raise your bid or expand your targeting.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>CTR low? Try new creatives.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/simplepinmedia.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Kate Ahl of Simple Pin Media<\/a> suggests something that can remedy an underperforming campaign:\u00a0<span class=\"_5yl5\">&#8220;Promote something that is converting well already and make sure your posts are engaging and bring them into your community. So, give them opportunities to sign up or buy early \u2014 and often. Don\u2019t expect people to read to the bottom of a page or post. Tasteful popups and sliders can work well here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Do your best, too, to keep the look of your pages at least somewhat similar to your Pins. If there is too great a disconnect in style or quality of images from Pinterest to site, you lose people before they\u2019ve read a word.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One other HUGE factor is how your site performs on mobile. If you check your Google analytics, it is likely you will find that 80% or more of the traffic from Pinterest to your site is from pinners on mobile. If your site doesn&#8217;t convert well on mobile, you should fix that now! In the meantime, though, limit your ad group targeting to desktop only.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-8-harness-the-power-of-a-strong-call-to-action-cta\">#8 Harness the Power of a Strong Call-to-Action (CTA)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Don\u2019t wait until you get people to your site to tell them what you want them to do. Include clear calls-to-action in your image and your description. Doing so will prepare pinners to convert on your site.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you follow even one or two of these suggestions, you\u2019ll see your click-through rate increase, your cost per click decrease, and your leads and sales pick up.
