Instagram geotags add location information to your Instagram posts, allowing people to see where your photo or video<\/a> was taken. If you\u2019re a brick-and-mortar business looking to attract local patrons, or if you\u2019re a global brand with a special message for your fans in a certain area, adding your location with a geotag makes you discoverable! For instance, say I\u2019m near Asheville, NC right now (I am!). I\u2019m looking for something interesting to do this weekend. A quick \u201cPlaces\u201d search brings up something interesting\u2026.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n

Instagram geotags are also great for building engagement. For instance, when people add your geotag or location to their Instagram posts, you can easily find them and start up a conversation or repost their image<\/a>!<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n

If you\u2019re an influencer looking to get the attention of a brand, add their location to posts connected with their store. Don\u2019t tag a location (especially a business) if it\u2019s not relevant, though!<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

What Is an Instagram Geotag?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

It sounds technical, but it\u2019s really just the location of your business or your location when you take a photo. Our phones know exactly where we are anytime we take a photo and it stores location data along with the file, which allows us to easily tag each of them when we share to Instagram. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A location or geotag can be a city, a town, or a specific business. If you want people to tag your business in their posts (and you do!) make sure your business location is available! Here’s how: <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Create Your Instagram Geotag for Your Business<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

First, you\u2019ll need to turn on Location Services:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

On an iOS device:<\/b><\/h5>\n\n\n\n

  1. Tap <\/span>Settings > Privacy > Location Services<\/b>.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. Toggle on <\/span>Location Services<\/b>.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    Now,  turn on location access for the Facebook app for iOS (version 8.0+):<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1. Tap <\/span>Settings > Privacy > Location Services<\/b>.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n
    2. Scroll through the list of apps below, tap <\/span>Facebook<\/b> and select <\/span>While Using the App<\/b>. <\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n
    3. Restart the Facebook app for iPhone or iPad.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n
      On an Android device:<\/b><\/h5>\n\n\n\n
        \n
      1. Tap <\/span>Settings > Location<\/b><\/li>\n\n\n\n
      2. Turn on Location Services<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

        In older Android devices (OS 5.1.1 and earlier), turning on Location Services automatically turns on location access for the Facebook app.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

        Next (OS 6.0+ only), turn on location access for the Facebook app:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

        1. Tap <\/span>Settings > Apps > Settings\u00a0> App Permissions > Location<\/b><\/li>\n\n\n\n
        2. Scroll through the list of apps and toggle the <\/span>Facebook <\/b>option on<\/span>.<\/b><\/li>\n\n\n\n
        3. Restart the Facebook app for Android<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n
          Now, you\u2019re ready to add (or edit) your Location!<\/b><\/h5>\n\n\n\n

          1. Click About on the left side of your Page<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n
          2. Click Edit Page Info<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n
          3. Below the Location section, click to check the box next to Has a street address and enter the address of your business<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n
          4. Keep in mind that you can drag the map to reposition the location of your business<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n
          5. If you’d like to let people check in to your business on Facebook, click to check the box next to Show map and check-ins on the Page<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n
          6. Click Save Changes<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

            If you’re unable to add an address to your Page, you may need to <\/span>change your Page category.<\/span><\/a> I had to change mine from a media company to a restaurant to get the Location option. I hope no one shows up looking for dinner! \ud83d\ude09<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

            How To Add a Geotag to an Instagram Post<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

            After you add your image or video and choose a filter (or not!), you come to the screen where you add a caption, tag people, and add a location.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n

            Instagram automatically populates \u201cLocation\u201d options with locations near where you were when you took the photo or video! If you don\u2019t see what you want, you can hit \u201c>\u201d to search for more.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

            Just choose the location and post as usual!<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n

            Adding a location to an Instagram Story is as simple as adding a location sticker!<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

            2. Click on the Sticker icon.\"Add<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n
            3. Choose the location sticker.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n
            4. Add your location.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n
            5. Go!<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

              Your Story may now be discoverable on the feed of the chosen location! <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

              On posts or Stories, you can also use hashtag locations to help your content appear as suggested when people are near your area.
