Today, we&#8217;ll go over the steps for how to balance light and color, and how to save your edits as a preset to easily apply to your other photos!<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;\">Here are a few pointers before we begin:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;\">It\u2019s ideal to <strong>start with a photo that has even lighting<\/strong>\u2014nothing too bright or dark.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;\">The <strong>background shouldn&#8217;t be so busy<\/strong> that it distracts from the subject.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;\"><strong>Shoot in RAW if possible<\/strong>. That&#8217;s especially helpful when you&#8217;re doing large batch edits. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And even though many quality presets are sold at a cost, there are plenty of free presets available for download.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, one size doesn&#8217;t fit all, and you may not want to purchase one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> <strong>Your camera settings, subject, lighting, and the background will be different than those used as samples in the preset<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The good news is, it&#8217;s only a little extra work in the beginning, but you can make your own custom presets that are perfectly suited for your photography.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We&#8217;ll show you all the steps to making a light and airy photo edit, and how to save them into a preset.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ready to<span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;\"> edit some light and airy photos with us? Don\u2019t pump it up too high or else your whites will be overwhelming. Keep it too dark, and it won&#8217;t work for the light and airy effect.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Check out the examples of too light, too dark and just right in the example below! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-pin-nopin=\"1\" data-src=\"https:\/\/twprod.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/asg_e76uBJ1q4HXpdr3X2Fart_8cGnb5k5E6H48Vrt2F1603014752095-Exposure-scaled-1.jpg\" alt=\"editing exposure in lightroom\" class=\"wp-image-21583 lazyload\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The exposure is too light on the left, while on the right it&#8217;s just too dark for a light and airy photo. <span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;\">Remember, you want to keep the lighting as even as possible in your photo for this step!<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;\"><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;\">If your original photo is darker or lighter than ours was, your final exposure might be a bit different, so don&#8217;t be afraid to experiment!<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;\"> <strong>Our final exposure: +0.45.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-step-two-check-temperature\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-style: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;\">Step Two: Check Temperature<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Next, lets get into temperature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;\">Temperature is an important part of the editing process.&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;\">Light and airy photos have tones that are true to real-life so there won&#8217;t be any drastic changes.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;\">Bringing your temperature down just a little can help your whites be more accurate, enhancing their brightness.&nbsp;Most likely,<strong> you\u2019ll only need to touch the temperature slightly.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;\">Aim for a happy medium: not too warm or cool. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-pin-nopin=\"1\" data-src=\"https:\/\/twprod.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/asg_e76uBJ1q4HXpdr3X2Fart_8cGnb5k5E6H48Vrt2F1602997554876-Temp-scaled-1.jpg\" alt=\"adjusting temperature for a light and airy photo edit\" class=\"wp-image-21584 lazyload\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;\">Here, you can see the left is too cool and the right is too warm. The middle section is the final. We&#8217;ve also adjusted the&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-style: italic; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;\">tint<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;\">&nbsp;to make sure our photo wasn\u2019t too green or pink.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-style: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;\">Temperature: +62.86. Tint: +29.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-step-three-adjust-contrast\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-style: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;\">Step Three: Adjust Contrast<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;\">Light and airy photos have a defined, but not exaggerated, contrast. When making this adjustment, <strong>you want to enhance the difference between lights and darks.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;\">Similarly to exposure, be careful of \u201cblowing out\u201d your whites. We want the lighting to remain even. Sharpness also makes the details in your picture more noticeable, which is characteristic of many light and airy photos.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;\"><span style=\"font-style: normal; font-weight: 400;\">The noise reduction tool can remedy excess<\/span>&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-style: italic; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;\">noise<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;\">, or \u201cgraininess.&#8221; You can also adjust the clarity of the image after applying your noise reduction settings, but you&#8217;d add less clarity in this case.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;\">Our image had a bit of noise over the top already, but not so much that we needed to reduce it. Because of this preexisting texture, we only bumped up the clarity a bit and didn\u2019t touch the sharpen or noise tools.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-style: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;\">Clarity: +15<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-step-seven-boost-relevant-colors-with-hsl\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-style: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;\">Step Seven: Boost Relevant Colors with HSL<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;\">The cherry on top for a great light and airy edit is in the colors. When you look up examples of photos in this style, you\u2019ll see how the colors are more relaxed, giving the final image a peaceful feel.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;\">Head over to the HSL panel of your editing program, where you can manually adjust each color. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;\">Quick review:&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-style: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;\">hue<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;\">&nbsp;intensifies the color itself,&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-style: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;\">saturation&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;\">is where you make it more vivid or toned down, and&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-style: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;\">luminance<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;\">&nbsp;is how bright it is.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;\">The great thing about the HSL panel is that you can fade certain colors or make them stand out, such as skin tone or elements in the background.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;\">Adjusting each color using HSL is probably going to be the most time-consuming part of your edit, but it\u2019s what will make your final photo absolutely stunning!<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;\">On the lefthand \u201cPresets\u201d panel, click the plus (or three dots) on the top right and select \u201ccreate preset.\u201d When it asks you which of your adjustments you want to save on the preset, select all except the cropping and alignment option since that\u2019ll vary for each of your photos.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;\">You can create categories for your own presets to help organize them as well.
