It\u2019s one of the most common things you will hear marketers talk about. But this simple statement begs a much more complex issue: how do you reuse your content on more than one social platform effectively?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fitness blogger Cassey Ho puts it perfectly in her interview with <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.morningbrew.com\/daily\/stories\/2021\/04\/11\/blogilates-cassey-ho-learned-run-fitness-social-media-empire\" target=\"_blank\">Morning Brew<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s like talking to different siblings; they just need to be talked do differently if you want a certain result.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How I&#8217;m going to talk to someone on TikTok is different than how I&#8217;m going to talk to them on Facebook.&#8221;<\/p>\n<cite>Cassey Ho, Founder of Blogilates<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>So when you think about repurposing your content on different platforms, it\u2019s not that your content has to be absolutely different. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But your presentation and how you get your message across has to be different, according to the users on those platforms. Sound pretty simple? Let\u2019s take a deeper look.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-know-your-audience\">Know Your Audience<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<p>Before you go creating yet another set of marketing personas, stop for just a second.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because it can be tempting at this point to start (or assign) the task of creating personas for each platform, but honestly, that won\u2019t change a thing about how you post online.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8220;Marketing personas are usually a boondoggle, but they don&#8217;t have to be.&#8221;<\/p>\n<cite>Rand Fishkin<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p> <strong>The question to ask yourself is not who in your audience is on what platform <\/strong>and create a \u201cFrancine Facebook\u201d and \u201cInstagram Ira\u201d along with \u201cTik-Tok Tracy\u201d and LinkedIn Larry\u201d. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead, social media personas need to be actionable, and to be actionable, they need to talk about two things:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul id=\"block-ce9dba49-6708-4f10-b715-3f9bdd19cb0d\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>What group or groups does that persona include, and how do they engage most often on a specific social media platform?<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>What specific problems does that particular group have if they are unique when compared to other social media personas?<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:33.33%\">\n<blockquote class=\"tiktok-embed\" cite=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@blogilates\/video\/6945566927796423942\" data-video-id=\"6945566927796423942\" style=\"max-width: 605px;min-width: 325px;\"> <section> <a target=\"_blank\" title=\"@blogilates\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@blogilates\" rel=\"noopener\">@blogilates<\/a> <p>Change your intention and you\u2019ll change your mind AND your body! <a title=\"bodyimage\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/tag\/bodyimage\" rel=\"noopener\">##bodyimage<\/a> <a title=\"blogilates\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/tag\/blogilates\" rel=\"noopener\">##blogilates<\/a> <a title=\"fitness\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/tag\/fitness\" rel=\"noopener\">##fitness<\/a> <a title=\"bodypositivity\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/tag\/bodypositivity\" rel=\"noopener\">##bodypositivity<\/a> <a title=\"bodylove\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/tag\/bodylove\" rel=\"noopener\">##bodylove<\/a> <a title=\"loveyourself\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/tag\/loveyourself\" rel=\"noopener\">##loveyourself<\/a> <a title=\"loveyourbody\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/tag\/loveyourbody\" rel=\"noopener\">##loveyourbody<\/a><\/p> <a target=\"_blank\" title=\"\u266c the real sorority check - elizabeth the first\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/music\/the-real-sorority-check-6737698700086233861\" rel=\"noopener\">\u266c the real sorority check &#8211; elizabeth the first<\/a> <\/section> <\/blockquote> <script async=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/embed.js\"><\/script>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>In short, you only really need the data that helps you take meaningful action. In this case, those actions are modifying your content to reach a specific audience, and also knowing what source that data came from, so it can be verified and revisited as needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019re doing less work than you would creating a more robust, (but less useful persona.) The good news is you can still give them clever names like TikTok Tracy if you really want to!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-know-the-platform\">Know the Platform<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<p>Pinterest = visual. Insta and TikTok = short form video. YouTube = longer-form video content, tutorials, etc. Facebook\u2026 You get the idea. Each platform has a different focus for the kind of content users respond to, and if you simply share the same content from platform to platform, it doesn\u2019t always work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cInstagram users are eating up Reels because I think there is a sect that is not willing to go on TikTok.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So that&#8217;s one place where I\u2019m able to use the same content on both platforms.&#8221;<\/p>\n<cite><a href=\"https:\/\/www.morningbrew.com\/daily\/stories\/2021\/04\/11\/blogilates-cassey-ho-learned-run-fitness-social-media-empire\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Cassey Ho<\/a><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>This is simply one example. Facebook and Insta stories can and do cross platforms well. Content that resonates on your Facebook business page might work on LinkedIn, but it\u2019s more likely that your blog posts, republished as LinkedIn articles, will do better.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The point is that you don\u2019t have to make completely new content for each platform, but you do need to tweak your content to fit the needs of each platform and consider up-cycling your content in a different format for each. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, you can pull points from that blog post you just featured on Facebook as a short video on Instagram or Tiktok!  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can reuse content and reduce your workload as long as you do it carefully.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:33.33%\">\n<blockquote class=\"instagram-media\" data-instgrm-captioned=\"\" data-instgrm-permalink=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/reel\/CNDwVV7hSHZ\/?utm_source=ig_embed&amp;utm_campaign=loading\" data-instgrm-version=\"13\" style=\" background:#FFF; You and your team create what you think is a clever little TikTok dance routine. Your marketing manager films it with his iPhone 12, and ta-da! Content! You post, and while you usually get pretty good engagement, with this post you get\u2026nothing.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Worse, you get some negative comments. Should you put that on Reels and see if it does better there? The answer is probably no. The audience for Reels and Tik Tok are similar enough you\u2019ll likely get the same reaction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Do you have to scrap that content idea entirely? Not at all. Perhaps your execution was poor, or you need to do something different with the idea on another platform. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s the key: get as many eyes on the content as you can before you post, preferably in your target audience. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can even run a $5 ad campaign (in some cases where this is possible on the platform) to test the waters and see what kind of engagement you get. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A lot of those Facebook anger emojis might mean this one needs to head for the bin. Then revisit what each platform is about and look at your graphic in that light.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Pay attention to color &#8211;<\/strong> The <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tailwindapp.com\/blog\/color-psychology-in-marketing\" target=\"_blank\">psychology of color <\/a>is well documented. Each platform\u2019s users may react differently. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Insta, with the right hashtags that red and yellow hero shot might do well. On LinkedIn, the same image, with different colors, might resonate better with a more professional audience. That pun might do well on Facebook with a slightly older audience, but a hipper cultural reference might resonate better on Instagram.
