This 30-minute plan should act as a spark to light the fuse that will ultimately take your business to the next level.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;\">It\u2019s not magic. It won\u2019t solve all your problems on its own.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;\">But it WILL get you over the hurdle of developing a marketing strategy in your small business. From there, you can add, adapt, improve, and leverage your plan to make the most of your marketing efforts.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;\">Let\u2019s dive in!<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-why-a-marketing-plan\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-style: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;\">Why a marketing plan?<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;\">\u201cHold on just a minute,\u201d you might be thinking. \u201cWhy do I even need an official marketing plan?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;\">Maybe you\u2019ve been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tailwindapp.com\/blog\/5-clever-ways-to-promote-your-blog-posts-on-instagram\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"17934\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">posting on Instagram<\/a> or generating word-of-mouth customers for a while now and don\u2019t think you need a marketing plan.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;\">And I guess you might be right.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;\">Sort of.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;\">But what you\u2019re missing out on if you don\u2019t develop a marketing plan\u2014even a simple one like I\u2019ll lay out today\u2014is the opportunity to predictably grow your business.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;\">If you\u2019re not 100% sure where your sales are coming from but you just know your current marketing activities are \u201cworking,\u201d then what happens when an algorithm changes, or your audience changes, or your advertising channels get saturated?<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;\">Any of those changes could be catastrophic if you don\u2019t know what\u2019s working and what\u2019s not when it comes to your marketing.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;\">Not to mention all the time you\u2019re spending on marketing when, according to&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pareto_principle\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; text-decoration: underline; vertical-align: baseline;\">the Pareto principle<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;\">, probably about 20% of your actual efforts account for 80% of your sales.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;\">When you build a plan, test what works, and identify what\u2019s not working, you can easily cut out marketing activities that just aren\u2019t delivering.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;\">But if you don\u2019t have a plan to brainstorm, test, analyze, and adapt, you\u2019ll never get to the point that you can grow predictably.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-rethinking-marketing\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-style: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;\">Rethinking \u201cmarketing\u201d<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;\">Before we get to the framework, I\u2019d like to suggest a paradigm shift in how you think about marketing.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;\">When we think of the word \u201cmarketing\u201d most of us tend to think about tasks that are actually classified under \u201cadvertising.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;\">These tasks include: posting on social media, putting an ad on the radio or TV, printing flyers, or sending out text messages.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;\">In reality, these actions are just one small part of \u201cmarketing\u201d and are most effective when considered together with the other portions of what marketing is in reality.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;\">So what is marketing then? To put it simply, marketing consists of three important phases:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;\">Research &amp; Audience Identification<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;\">Advertising &amp; Promotion<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;\">Customer Experience &amp; Satisfaction<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-why-am-i-telling-you-this\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-style: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;\">Why am I telling you this?<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;\">The truth is: you\u2019re probably spending more time on \u201cmarketing\u201d than you think. For example, you\u2019re doing marketing anytime you give a customer a positive experience with your company (increasing chances of high ratings or referrals and further business).<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;\">So as we go through the marketing plan today, keep in mind: there\u2019s way more to marketing than just advertising your product to people who may want to buy it.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;\">It\u2019s much deeper than that.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;\">In reality it\u2019s about finding a \u201cmarket\u201d fit with your product or service and then providing the best possible solution to your target audience.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-30-minute-marketing-plan\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-style: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;\">The 30-minute marketing plan<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;\">Okay, without any more lead-in, let\u2019s get into the actual 30-minute marketing plan. If you follow this framework, you should be able to build a basic, yet impactful marketing plan in 30 minutes or less.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-10-minutes-audience\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-style: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;\">10 Minutes: Audience<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>You don&#8217;t even need a full-length, fancy audience breakdown &#8211; you just need an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tailwindapp.com\/blog\/getting-to-know-you-creating-actionable-marketing-personas\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"24069\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">actionable marketing persona<\/a>. <span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;\">To begin, take around&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-style: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;\">3 minutes each<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;\">&nbsp;to provide 1-2 sentences answering all of the following questions:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-1-who-is-my-target-audience-nbsp\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-style: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;\">1. Who is my target audience?&nbsp;<\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-style: italic; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;\">Think demographics like age, gender and income, but also psychographics like why they buy things, what they\u2019re interested in, or daily behaviors.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-style: italic; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;\">_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________<\/span><br><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-style: italic; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-style: italic; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;\">_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-2-what-problem-will-i-solve-for-my-target-audience\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-style: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;\">2. That\u2019s why focusing on repeat business and generating referrals are critical to the future growth of your business.<\/span><br><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-style: italic; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;\">_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________<span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-style: italic; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;\">_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-repeat-the-process-often\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-style: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;\">Repeat the process often<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;\">What\u2019s great about having such a quick framework for your marketing is you don\u2019t have to dread the idea of drafting up a new marketing plan for you or your team to follow.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;\">Since it only takes 30 minutes, this is something you can revisit over and over again as your business grows, your product evolves, or your audience changes.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;\">As you learn new things about your product or process, add them to the next iteration of your marketing plan.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-answering-some-common-questions\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-style: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;\">Answering some common questions\u2026<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;\">Because this was such a quick framework, you\u2019re probably left asking a few questions. Below, allow me to answer some that I think you might have.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-about-the-tactics\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-style: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;\">What about the tactics?<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;\">First, you might be asking: what about all the tactics? The day-to-day marketing \u201cstuff\u201d I have to do?<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;\">You\u2019ve got a point. This marketing plan won\u2019t work at all without a similar brainstorming session to address, in more detail, all the little things that need to happen in order to actually DO marketing.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;\">But remember, this 30-minute plan isn\u2019t about DOING, it\u2019s about PLANNING. And far too many small business owners get caught up in the PLANNING too often and never actually get to the DOING.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;\">By limiting the planning to 30 minutes (repeated every few weeks or months) you can spend more time actually executing on your marketing plan.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;\">You may also want to&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tailwindapp.com\/blog\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; text-decoration: underline; vertical-align: baseline;\">subscribe to our blog&nbsp;<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;\">for frequent marketing ideas for small businesses.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-if-i-don-t-know-all-the-answers\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-style: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;\">What if I don\u2019t know all the answers?<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;\">Depending on where you are in your business, you may not have all the answers to the questions above.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;\">In that case, your first time through it may take you more than 30 minutes.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;\">If you don\u2019t have a quick answer to a question, I suggest you not get hung up on it. Answer it the best you can and then revisit with any time you have left over. Some questions may help dislodge answers to previously difficult questions.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;\">Some answers may require further investigation: such as where your audience spends their time or which technology you\u2019ll use to capture leads.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-you-ve-got-this\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-style: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;\">You\u2019ve got this!<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;\">The whole point of this marketing plan is to get some traction. Marketing doesn\u2019t have to be overwhelming.
