Do remember though, that Instagram posts aren’t linkable, so to share something from Instagram to Pinterest with the aim of getting them to find something your site (such as a blog post or product listing) isn’t ideal.  Instead, share a Pinterest-specific image for your blog post which links right to the post.

Instagram is perfect for building personal connections with your followers. On Instagram, they want to see your company BBQ photos or your office dog hanging out on the couch – but they don’t want to see that on Pinterest. Only post from Instagram to Pinterest when you know it will be engaging to the audience on that platform. Likewise, a short-term sale is great subject matter for Instagram, but not for Pinterest, where Pins live forever.

    Can you explain where, specifically, to "share a Pinterest-specific image" which links right to the post even though Instagram posts aren't linkable? Thanks for all you do.

    • I'm so glad this was helpful to you, Eliza. You know, I struggled with how to clarify that. I guess I didn't quite do it! Sorry.

      OK, so an Instagram post isn't linkable, so if you're sharing an image that's all about a new blog post, it doesn't really make a lot of sense to save that image to Pinterest because it links back to that Instagram post. Now people who might really want to read that blog post aren't going to be able to find it and will be frustrated.

      Any blog post is worth a Pinnable image that links people right back to that blog post. Save the Instagram posts you Pin for those that don't require people to then go looking for a link. Does that help?

  • Hi Alisa, I love this article and I love the idea of doing this, but can you confirm that the size of Instagram (square) posts are recommended for Pinterest engagement?

    • Hello there, Jeanette! The recommended ratio is a bit taller, that's true. But I would say it's definitely worth a try. Depending on the content, it may well be very engaging even if it's a tiny bit shorter than most.
