Pinterest Goes Global

Pinterest Goes Global

Pinterest is quickly becoming a global phenomenon. According to Media Bistro, they’ve amassed over 70 million users worldwide, with 45.6% of the users hailing from the United States. This implies that there are a total of 38 million Pinterest users from other parts of the world, all with great and innovative ideas that are distinct and unique to their own culture. Here are our top picks of international Pinterest boards:

Shopify
Shopify_2An Ottawa based company, Shopify gives businesses an online presence and makes it easy for them to create a Web store. Founded by Tobias Lütke in 2004, the company has since gained a revenue that exceeds $2 million. Their Pinterest boards is categorically placed and sparks interest in both women and men.

Boards we love
: Their “Cool Products on Shopify” board is undoubtedly their most successful board. With over 1,100 pins and 3,179 followers, they pin about trendy and unique products that traditional stores don’t have. It is also a brilliant platform for their customers’ business and provides free marketing to showcase their products.

Museo Interactivo de Economía (Interactive Museum of Economics)
MIDE_2
From Tacuba Street in Mexico City, the Museo Interactivo de Economia (or MIDE) is virtually the first ever museum on economics. Opened in 2006, the museum focuses on exhibits that make economics education fun and engaging, primarily for students. What’s cool about MIDE’s Pinterest account is their boards are an extension of their museum galleries. Every collection is categorized and has pictures of all their amazing exhibits.

Boards we love: MIDE’s main building is a sight to behold and they love it so much that they dedicated an entire board to highlight the museum’s amazing architecture. “Nuestro Edificio”  means “Our Building” and the board showcases their pride in the museum by including pictures and historical facts about the building. We are big foodies here at Tailwind and we love that they also included a board of recipes from their museum bistro in “Bistró Club.”

Torta per Te – Valle’

Valle'_2

Speaking of food, we can’t resist a cool Pinterest account with pictures of food and desserts – which is exactly what Torta per Te Valle’ has. Valle’ is a butter and margarine product company from Italy and has been around since 1975. Owned by French company St.Hubert SAS, they specialize in producing butter that is cholesterol free, low in fat and contains zero hydrogenated fats.

Boards we love: Honestly, all of their boards are amazing! If you are the type who enjoys baking, you are in for a “treat” because each pin is directly linked to their main domain which contains full recipes of their delicious goods.

Newburn Bakehouse by Warburtons

Warbutons_2

Another food related Pinterest account, this time from the United Kingdom. Newburn Bakehouse by Warburtons is a bakery that specializes in producing gluten and wheat-free products. Company chairman, Jonathan Warbuton has a niece who can only digest foods that are gluten and wheat free and inspired him to create products that everyone, including people with dietary restrictions can enjoy.

Boards we love: “#Lunchoff” has a range of gluten free recipes for everything from wraps, sandwiches, salads and other lunchtime favorites that look incredibly delicious. Just like Valle’, their pins link to their main domain with a full list of recipes.

@Rolf- It’s true, most websites can be accessed in most countries. However, for a company like Pinterest “going global” isn’t just about the website being accessible globally. Other important considerations come into play such as
    (1) providing localized versions that are available in other languages,
    (2) offering language/locally filtered content,
    (3) providing support and resources in other languages or targeted at different locales,
    (4) adjusting Terms of Service to work with the varied legal environment from country to country,
    (5) hiring staff in other countries to serve local customers,
    (6) marketing the platform locally to reach critical mass of adoption in a given locale,
    etc.

Pinterest’s rapid localization / internationalization began last year. Today Pinterest is available in nearly 30 languages- a number that I’m guessing will only continue to grow. This is a great thing for the platform and for its users, as it signifies global adoption and will lead to more and higher quality content being shared across the world.

Such globalization is not easy to achieve. Even as a smaller company, Tailwind has users in over 100 countries today. As a team of 13 people, we naturally don’t have team members that can support all of those users in their native languages or with appropriate knowledge of their local culture and business environment. I hope someday that will change, but for now we do the best we can. In a way, we’re a “global” company, but from my perspective our degree of globalization is far from where it needs to be longer-term.

Pinterest is a very simple concept. Just picture sharing. Images are a

universal language. Pictures not words express more.

the little translation is nor really globalization in terms of corporate identity.

as for marketing locally, well, what is Pinterest really about?

i see tons of Pinterest books/posters/tips/infographics that hype it as a marketing tool but have yet to see how businesses truly benefit financially from it and improve their ROI – it seems more hot fluff or to be typical of our American Marketing Hype B.S.

if anything you should be able to send a pint to your Pinterest Followers to let’s say have them click and vote or like it, but even if you have 1000s of followers none click – so what is the true point of Pinterest?

at best Pinterest is a personal organizer of your ideas/preferences to keep for inspiration. not losing it or risking it damaged as physical scrapbooks.

It seems Pinterest as FB is all our economy depends on lately, and the best we have to offer as a sound foundation for the economy is this much hot air. it’s no wonder, if we can’t think of better, more tangible, smarter businesses, that our economy is bankrupt, both financially & Think Different-wise.

if Pinterest were to be more practical than a fancy digital housewife scrapbook version, then why is it taking them years and still not including features that may be excused as pro, but are basic even!?

      Pinterest app can NOT:
      1. contact PINNERS (comment section is not private & personal message gets lost)

      2. contact pinterest SUPPORT by email / tel / chat
a firm that gets such a list and never responds in years, does not deserve success: it does not listen, not respect users, is unprofessional, more narcissistic than practical etc. (the only reason i still use it is for personal reasons, not pro)

      3. contact pinners to join GROUP BOARDS: very awkward solution:
      a. you can not contact pinners directly
      b. you can not simply make boards public without contacting specific pinners & wasting time waiting for response
      c. you click on your group Board, then Send to a pinner supposedly yet when searching for pinners, pinterest says it can never find any though you know they exist as you repinned them

      4. see # followers per Board when you look at a board page;
you can see #pins, but not #followers (should be preference option)

      5. see what Followers repinned from you

      6. RESHUFFLE pin order within board, within app (yes online only)

      7. duplicate Board to edit or convert to Group Board (whilst keeping your original board intact)

      8. edit URL of pins in app (online, yes)

      there’s so many can Nots…
pinterest should get their act together, not just be cheap Social (media) “Wh_res”, but give something more for it than mere boarding (which is too simpleton, not too practical or genuine or qualitative and certainly never professional enough)

I’d encourage you to dig deeper, Rolf. Try testing different content strategies if you’re not seeing your content being engaged with. If you’re not including text descriptions and rich pin metadata, you should try it. I’ve personally seen evidence of small businesses earning $100,000s from Pinterest- and large ones earning far more. The opportunity is there, but as with any platform, you need to learn how to use it.

i have not seen better, more detailed, descriptive, informative descriptions to pins than mine! in 2 years with zero marketing i gathered 3000 followers+ but also zero benefits other than just the number 3000

I think Pinterest probably now has more than 100 million users. The 70 million number is from July 2013 and they were adding 3 to 4 million new users a month.
