So, it happened. You posted to your Instagram, only to see a mistake in your caption, location, tags or in the photo itself!
Now you’re wondering how to edit an Instagram post after posting – and you’ve come to the right place.
Whether you’re correct a spelling error or add a missed photo to a carousel post, we’re covering all the major mistake-prone spots, including captions, locations, tags, and photos.
In this article, you’ll learn how to edit each of these four categories with step-by-step instructions.
Don’t worry; you can fix your Instagram mistakes faster than you can say, “No one saw that!”
Let’s get to it! ✏️
How Do You Edit The Caption, Location, Tags On An Instagram Post?
First things first. If you’ve messed up your location or tags or need to know how to edit your Instagram caption, here’s the way to fix them:
Tap the three dots at the top right.
Find Edit on the menu.
Edit your caption, tags, Alt Text or location by tapping each.
Find the Instagram photo you want to edit
Tap the three dots at the top right of the photo
Tap Edit on the drop-down menu that appears
Press the detail you want to edit. You can make changes to:
Instagram photo tags (bottom left)
Instagram Alt Text (bottom right)
Location (Top Left)
Caption
When you’re finished, press Done (iOS)or the checkmark (Android).
But wait! There are a few things to keep in mind when you’re editing your caption, especially if you’re trying to fix formatting or line breaks!
If you’ve posted your caption and it’s one wall of text, you can add spaces to your caption by hitting the return key after each paragraph.
Just make sure you remove any hidden spaces after the punctuation at the end of your sentences, or Instagram will ignore your line break!
You may even have to remove an emoji (at the end of your sentence) in order to get it to work.
Sound annoying? It is. There’s good news though!
You can avoid formatting issues entirely by using the caption tool in Tailwind for Instagram! Our formatting tool allows you to add a clever caption and select your favorite emojis with ease from the Emoji Picker keyboard.
It also automatically removes the pesky space that appears after emoji on your smartphone keyboard.
Not only that, but our caption tool also preserves your line breaks!
Well, unless you hit the Space key after the end of your line! ⛔️
Can You Edit A Picture On Instagram After Posting It?
You may be searching the web, desperately trying to find out how to edit Instagram photos after posting.
Here’s the bad news – you can’t. Unfortunately, you have one shot to add the right filter, crop or adjust your photo before it goes live. Instagram doesn’t currently support any features to edit your Instagram photos after you post.
If you’ve messed up your favorite photo before sending it to your feed, your best bet is to delete and re-upload.
Make sure to copy and paste your caption before you do this, so you don’t lose all your hard work – and hashtags!
I’m sorry we don’t have better news here. To cut down on room for error, make sure to edit your Instagram photos thoroughly before posting.
Can You Add A Photo To An Existing Post?
So, can you add photos to an Instagram post after you’ve posted it? No, you can’t. Unfortunately, this capability isn’t available on Instagram OR in Facebook Creator Studio yet (although it’s certainly been requested!)
Missed out on adding a key photo or video to your latest carousel post?
You’ll want to delete or archive the post as quickly as possible and re-upload the correct series.
Pay close attention to each frame and swipe through a few times to double-check before you post!
This will help you keep track and catch mistakes before they go live.
Plan, Schedule, Publish Your Posts In One Place!
In fact, one of the best ways to combat pesky mistakes on Instagram posts before they cost you time and energy is planning and scheduling your content in advance!
That’s where our all-in-one tool comes in!

Your Instagram bio is important. It’s the first real detail about your brand that your profile viewers see when they visit your page. In fact, what you say in your bio (and how you say it!) is the opportunity to inspire brand love and loyalty!
Think about it. When you first visit an Instagram profile, chances are you look at the profile picture (or logo) first. Then your eyes travel to the right to the bolded Instagram name line. Finally, you drop to the Instagram bio written just underneath that name line and the link in bio at the end.
The information you glean from the bio in just seconds is all you need to make a snap decision about whether an Instagram brand or presence is worth a follow!
No pressure, though! You can easily optimize your Instagram bio in just six steps to make an amazing first impression, and even drive traffic from your Instagram to your website.
Keep reading to learn how!
Step 1: Introduce Your Brand With Your Instagram Name
You know how the saying goes. What’s in a name?
The opportunity to brand your Instagram bio even more, that’s what!
Technically, you have two names on Instagram. One is your Instagram handle, which you choose when you sign up for Instagram and have to change in your Settings. The other is your Instagram profile name!
Check out where the two appear on travel blogger Helen Sula’s Instagram page, where “heleneinbetween” is the handle:
Your profile name shows up in bold right above your Instagram bio, just like a little heading. If you wanted to, you could just put your company or brand name in this line. However, you might be missing out on a few extra opportunities to brand your profile and attract more followers if you stop there!
You have 30 available characters in this line (including emojis!), and it’s a great place to describe what you do, who you are, or what you’re all about.
After making sure your name and company name are clear from your Instagram handle and your Profile name, you might have a little additional space to add some keywords and emojis to clue your followers into what they can expect from you and your content!
If you use this trick, try to limit your chosen keywords to three of the most impactful words you can find to describe your business or brand words or less. That way, your name isn’t too lengthy and distracting, while still getting your point across.
You’ll also want to use vertical slashes or symbols to space out each word, such as | or // to keep your profile looking clean and organized. For example, in our image above, Helene used her full name followed by “| Travel Blogger.” That’s a great way to add just a little bit of context in a way that really stands out.
Add Hashtags and Mentions to Your Instagram Bio
We get this question a lot, so we just wanted to clear this up. You can add hashtags and mentions to your Instagram bio to create a clickable hyperlink. However, you may be wondering if hashtags in your Instagram bio actually work?
The answer is, not in the way you’re used to them working. If you include hashtags into your Instagram bio, it doesn’t mean that your profile will automatically appear in that search stream. However, if you include a hashtag in your Instagram bio, users will be able to click on that hashtags and see all of the posts using that hashtag!
If you’ve created a hashtag specifically for your community or business, it’s a great idea to include it in your Instagram bio so your profile visitors can see it – and it’s also a great spot to collect user-generated content!
Adding a user mention works the same way in your bio (creating a clickable hyperlink), and is a great way to introduce the face or faces behind your brand if you’re hesitant to mix business and personal content. Just link your Instagram handle and add a little clue for curious browsers!
Check out how The Blonde Abroad includes both hashtags and user mentions in her bio.
Step 2: Helping Followers Fall in Love With Your Brand Through a Clear Instagram Bio
Did we mention that your Instagram bio only allows for 150 characters total? That’s why it’s important not to waste this valuable real estate on unnecessary details. For example, there’s no need to restate your name here; instead, focus on providing any details that you didn’t get across in your profile picture and name line!
Also, keep in mind that your bio is usually the last thing people read before making a decision to follow you OR click on the link in your bio!
To make the most out of your bio space, do the following:
Use different words (not the same ones as in your name line) to further describe your brand focus or blog content.
Give your followers an idea of what they can expect from you by mentioning how often you provide new content. An example would be “new posts every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday!” or, “my IGTV videos drop every Thursday at noon!”
Clarify what your followers can expect from your Instagram content, and the content they can find at your blog or website. Be careful not to be too broad or misleading, because the last thing you want to do is promise a type of content you don’t consistently deliver. That’s a good way to lose a follower (and a potential customer) for good!
After you focus on the message you want to convey with your bio, you’ll want to format it for easy readability and understanding. After all, you have just a few seconds to grab and hold the attention you need to gain a new fan or customer!
Keep reading for some quick tips on how to format your Instagram bio to support your brand and make conversions so much easier!
Step 3: Format Your Instagram Bio For Easy Readability
After you’ve decided on the elements you want to include in your bio, it’s time to turn that little paragraph into an easy-to-read, visually flowing masterpiece that leads into your jaw-dropping Instagram feed OR the link in your bio!
How to Format Your Instagram Bio
Nothing turns off readers faster than a thick paragraph of words with no line breaks, spaces or easy-to-follow separators. A block of words might just make your followers’ eyes (and brains!) tired before they even begin.
Not exactly the impression you want to give when you’re looking for buy-in and excitement, right?
You can avoid this by formatting your Instagram bio with line breaks or those handy slashes we mentioned earlier.
Lettering artist Dawn Nicole does this really well in her Instagram bio:
When you type your Instagram bio, make sure to remove any spaces before and after each sentence that you want to put a line break around. Then hit return. (If you’re on an Apple device, tap the number button in the lower-left corner of your keyboard to find your return button!) This will move the next sentence down to its own line.
You can create full line breaks in between each sentence by adding emojis, slashes or periods.
In fact, you might even consider switching out some words and phrases with relevant emojis to spark some visual interest and create a refreshing reset for your viewer’s eyes!
Step 4: Drive Traffic to Your Brand Website With a Strong Call to Action
The next element of a perfectly branded Instagram bio is an important one! It’s the next step your followers or visitors should take to learn even more about your product, blog or brand.
Most often, this would be going to your website or another location to view more of your content. That’s why it’s so handy to include a link in your bio by adding in a relevant URL.
Speaking of URLs, did you know that you can add links to your Instagram bio? Here’s how:
How to Add a Link To Your Instagram Bio
Tap “Edit Profile”
Enter your URL in the Website section
Tap “Done”!
Easy, right?
This URL is usually referred to as a “link in bio” on Instagram, and you can add super-simple calls to action (CTAs) to your post captions by telling your followers to click your link in bio to learn more!
However, just because most users on Instagram recognize a link in bio, doesn’t mean that you should assume every user does. You can spell out the next steps for visitors who may not understand what to do by adding a clue to the last line in your bio.
Say something like, “tap the link below to see our products” or “click the link to read my latest post”. You can make this even more clear by adding in emojis or symbols like arrows or sirens to grab attention and eliminate any lingering confusion.
Step 5: Get an Ultra-Clickable Instagram Bio Link Tool (Like Tailwind’s Smart.Bio!)
While you can put a link in your bio directly to your website URL, this isn’t always the most helpful link to use especially if you want to direct followers to a certain page or promotion. That’s why a ton of Instagram users choose a link in bio tool that acts as a landing page for multiple links, including links shared with each post!
Tailwind’s brand-new FREE Smart.bio tool does just that! In just a matter of moments, you can create a clean, branded link in your bio (it looks like smart.bio/yourusernamehere) so that your followers enjoy a branded experience from start to finish.
When choosing a link in bio tool, it’s important to choose one that doesn’t create a distracting, lengthy link in your bio. Even better, a link in bio tool that allows you to create your own custom URL can keep your Instagram bio effortlessly branded!

1. Respond to Your Comments
Not only is responding to comments as they come in the polite thing to do, it also opens up opportunities for more comments!
First, when people scroll past your post in their Instagram feed, they’ll see a higher number of comments on the post – including your responses!
The higher the number, the higher the chance that casual Instagram users will stop and take a look, and potentially leave a comment themselves.
Second, you can create a conversation between you and people commenting on your post.
This is as easy as responding to the original comment and asking another question. When they respond, you can continue the conversation and drive engagement higher by just being personable!
2. Reciprocate Engagement
This ones a little more time-consuming, but it’s a powerful tactic when approaching how to get comments in Instagram.
When you have some spare time to set aside, get into your Instagram account and check out the list of users who have interacted with your latest post with a like.
Tap through to their Instagram profile and leave a few likes and at least one comment on their latest post!
This is a great way to thank them for leaving a like in the first place, and it encourages them to reciprocate the engagement by visiting your profile again and interacting with you.
This is also true for accounts that are already following you – it’s a great way to build a relationship.
Plus, you train your followers to comment on your Instagram posts and engage with you, because you’re doing the same for them!
3. Creatively Ask People to Comment
Don’t be afraid to get creative about how you ask people to leave comments on your Instagram posts. You could stick with the classic “leave a comment!” prompt, but why not make it easy and fun?
For example, you can include a fill in the blank prompt in your post, like: “The summer must-haves in your purse are ______, ______ and _______!”
Or, you could post a funny photo with a simple, “Caption This!” and tell your followers that the best captions will get a shoutout on the post.
It’s like a mini- Instagram contest, and you don’t even have to arrange a prize!
4. Do an Instagram Giveaway
Speaking of contests, we did our own research study that shows Instagram giveaways knock it out of the park when it comes to engagement.
This is for a few reasons: 1) People love winning free stuff and 2) many Instagram contests have rules that include liking the giveaway post, following the account, and tagging their friends in the comments section.

5. Host an Instagram Takeover
Instagram takeovers are also an amazing way to get more engagement on your posts – especially if you have a guest with a passionate, engaged following already!
A takeover has mutual benefits. It exposes content to new audiences for both collaborators.
So, you have plenty of opportunities to grow your following and get more reach!
6. Invite People to Tag Friends
A lot of people love to tag their friends in funny or ultra-relatable content.
It’s a way for them to build a connection with friends and family!
It’s also a way for you to get in front of new audiences that might really enjoy your content. So, everyone is a winner here.
Next time you post a meme or a totally relatable post, include a call to action for people to tag their friends in the comments.
It can be as simple as, “tag a friend who does this.”

7. Add In Some Cute Photos
Your followers love to see photos of you, but you know what else Instagrammers love? Animals and cute Instagram photos that make them go “awww!”
Take Marawa for example – this stunning roller-skating beauty gets lots of engagement on regular photos on her feed.
But when she posts videos and photos of Darryl the squirrel – including this table set she bought for him – the comments go wild.
If you have a cute pet, some adorable baby photos or feel-good content in your camera roll, don’t be afraid to post it up!
We bet it’ll get tons of engagement.
You can further your reach on cute photos by adding in relevant Instagram hashtags so more animal lovers will see your pics!
You can even save your mix of relevant hashtags into lists to use later!

8. Ask Thoughtful Questions
Our final pro tip is to ask thought-provoking questions that resonate with your following.
Sure, you can get some engagement from questions like “which one do you like better?” but if you want conversations and connection in your comments section, use a poll on Instagram Stories for this-or-that instead!
Think about asking questions that your audience will consider and answer with a lot of feeling – like this example from @hellosunshine!
If you scroll the comments section, you’ll notice that people are answering themselves, and also jumping into the conversation in threads on other answers.
That’s the best-case scenario for how to get more comments on your Instagram photos!

And a great Instagram caption can help you do just that!
So let’s dive in and talk about how to write Instagram captions that inspire your followers to take action.
Why Good Instagram Captions Drive More Sales
A great Instagram photo or video helps stop your audience from scrolling past, but your Instagram caption has the potential to draw them in even more!
It encourages followers to engage with your Instagram post and moves them closer to a sale with a meaningful call to action.
So while a picture may be worth 1,000 words, an engaging Instagram caption could be worth 1,000 dollars!
How to Write Great Instagram Captions in 7 Steps
Though much of your success depends on motivating Instagram captions, there’s no need to panic even if you aren’t a natural writer.
Creating Instagram captions that have people engaging with your posts and making purchases isn’t difficult if you keep a few handy tips in mind!
These seven steps will help you learn how to write a caption on your Instagram photo that leaves your followers scrambling to find out more!
And guess what? These don’t just apply to Instagram sales – you can use these tips to build engagement, or encourage people to read your latest blog posts!
1. Develop Your Brand Voice in Your Instagram Captions
Your brand voice might be funny, casual, sarcastic, or even formal. Just remember, consistency is key when it comes to how to write good Instagram captions!
Denny’s Diner has been in business since the 1950s, but they’ve found a way to update their brand voice, references, and personality to appeal to younger generations successfully.
You can see this on their Instagram, where captions are usually short, sweet, and laden with emojis.
2. Create Several Drafts of Your Instagram Caption Text
When you create an Instagram post on the fly, your caption might not be the best it can be.
Oftentimes the answer to how to write an Instagram caption that truly works is to try writing it a few times!
Instagram captions should go through a couple of drafts before being published to your feed, which means you don’t want to rush your caption copywriting!
Planning is key when creating captions that sell. By using Tailwind’s Instagram scheduling tool you can plan out your captions ahead of time, and even save them as drafts while you’re perfecting them!
Simply upload your image, start working on your caption, and pick your hashtags, and the best time to post with our SmartSchedule tool. Then, access your upcoming post at any time in your calendar and click the pencil icon to make any changes to your post!
And just like any other piece of copy, you should carefully proofread your captions.
3. Include a Call To Action (CTA) In Your Captions
If you don’t effectively direct your followers to take action, they likely won’t. Your caption CTA will likely direct viewers of your Instagram post to visit your checkout page, and hopefully, get them to purchase your product!
Some examples are CTA’s are:
“Visit the clickable link in our bio to learn more.”
“ View our newest collection by clicking the link in our bio.”
“(your item) is on sale now. Link in bio!”
Your motivating call to action should be front-loaded and placed near the top of your caption.
Your audience might not always click to “read more”, so include your CTA near the top.
Captions can be fun and inspiring, but if they’re going to help sell your products, your CTA needs to direct users to a place where they can purchase the products you sell.
One way to do this is with a link in bio tool, like Tailwind’s smart.bio! You can easily add links to your smart.bio posts when scheduling in Tailwind updated your link page in real-time as soon as the post goes live.
Our emotions heavily influence what we buy. Tapping into your followers’ emotions through your caption can help increase sales and can be done so when we can evoke feelings of Fear, Belonging, Trust and Inspiration.
Using fear or “FOMO” to drive sales doesn’t mean you are making your customers feel anxious, worried, or any other harmful emotion.
Simply stating that you have a limited quantity in stock or setting a time limit on when the item can be purchased is sufficient.
@Travelocity uses FOMO to promote trips and vacations by using a specific holiday as their limited-time offer.
Belonging
We all crave connection andwant a sense of community. Speaking to your followers as if they are part of your tribe can help develop that sense of belongingness with your brand which will help you sell products.
@airbnb speaks to their audience through their captions as if they are one big family.
Frequently included in the features of various Airbnb properties are details about the area and the hosts.
This serves to create a much more homey, personalized connection with each location for prospective travelers than typically experienced with hotel properties.
Adding customer testimonials to your captions can help you build trust between you and your audience.
You can evenre-post user-generated content to use as your photo – people love to see Instagrammers like them talking about your products!
Passion Planner frequently posts success stories and user-generated content from their loyal following – #PashFam!
Inspiration
A challenging aspect to e-commerce is that your potential buyer can’t hold the product in their hands before they buy.
Use your captions to describe to your followers how your product can help improve their life – or even to describe in detail what the product looks or feels like up close!
@lornajaneactive inspires their community to be healthy and active through their posts that promote their products.
They do a masterful job of featuring products to their audience in the context they can be used in – such as “weekend paddleboarding adventure” in this caption!
5. Add Hashtags to Instagram Captions
When creating Instagram captions, you’d be selling yourself short (no pun intended!) if you only focused on the copy! The right hashtags will help you extend your reach, get your posts seen by more potential customers, and help grow your Instagram account.
Instagram allows up to 30 hashtags in your caption and finding those hashtags can be a challenge if you’re manually searching for them for each and every Instagram post.
